Exploring Rome: An Honest Guide for First-Time Visitors

share this post:

I’ve recently returned from my first ever trip to Rome, and after spending only three nights in the city, I can confidently say that this city is one of my favourite places I’ve visited yet. From the unreal food to the breathtaking ancient architecture, I was completely blown away by just how much this city has to offer. I’ve always been drawn to Rome through photos of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, etc. and just knew I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to see these places with my own eyes. And of course the cuisine too was a huge selling point. If my love for carbs wasn’t already enough at home, going to the home of true authentic pizza and pasta was an absolute must.

Accommodation

Where I Stayed

I believe in choosing a high quality and trustworthy lodging for any trip, even if you don’t plan on spending much time there. And you can do this without spending 100’s. I usually use hotels.com to book my accommodation wherever I’m travelling to, and will always double down and check TripAdvisor reviews for any accommodation that I like the look of before going ahead and booking. After going back and forth with a few accommodation options, we decided to settle on Via Veneto Luxury Suites. We settled on this accommodation for the perfect reviews backed up with professional and sleek photos, the reasonable pricing, and the location of the property.

Cost Breakdown

As we were travelling in a group of 4 – 3 adults and 1 child – it can sometimes be tricky to find properties that can accommodate us for a reasonable price. Usually we find the only option is to purchase 2 rooms, which can significantly increase the price. This was the first sell point for this property, as we were able to book a family room that sleeps 4 – already bringing the cost down for us. The total cost for accommodation for this trip for us was £450.87. This includes £40.98 in taxes and fees. This then meant we paid £100.43 per night, or just over £25 per person per night. This was an incredibly reasonable cost, and while it may not have been the cheapest option in the city, the stay was definitely worth every penny.

Arrival & Check-In

Finding the entrance to the property was tricky. While we did find the building, it wasn’t completely clear to us the location of the accommodation within the building. However after no longer than around 10 minutes of awkwardly waiting around at the doors to the property, Giorgio, our host, came to greet us and showed us the way to the suites on the 5th floor where he checked us in. The check-in process was smooth, and Giorgio directed us to take a seat in the breakfast area where he had coffee and a selection of pastries for us to help ourselves too. He also provided a map of the city, in which he marked out the location of the property, all of the attractions and must-sees, and anything else he believed we shouldn’t pass up on, as well as providing us with a QR code to scan for restaurant recommendations in the city. This warm and thought-out welcome immediately set the tone for the trip, and we were so appreciative of Giorgio to take the time to introduce his city to us in such a passionate and thoughtful manner.
